First snow of the winter and did it come down! Darren and myself were at the club on Sat before shoot day as we knew the bad weather was coming. We managed to cover up all the traps so at least they would be dry and would not freeze up.
We were back again on Sunday at 6.30am , we cleared all the snow off the traps and flattened down the snow so the rabbits would run ok. We only had one trap go down on us and that was the skeet tower trap so we just turned on the one beneath it. The only other trap to cause any grief was the suicidal rabbit which for some reason was freezing up and causing a lot of breakages . We can only apologise for the inconvenience on this stand but it was out of our control.
What a morning to be out and about, I thought it was fantastic. There is some thing great about shooting in the snow. (I know big kid).
On to this weeks sporting. There were some very subtle changes to the last shoot.
Stand 1 Left to right crosser at about 30 yards and a left to right curling in-clay dropping in front of the cage, on report
The crosser caused a few issues this week for no reason, it was dropping quite fast so I think the problem for most was shooting over the clay. The incomer was hit by most this week but if not dusted the bits caused a few near misses to bystanders.
Stand 2 Left low slightly crossing and left rising straight going away, on report.Every one I saw shoot this stand shot it really well, lots of 9’s and 10’s scored, both targets just need to be shot slightly above .
Stand 3 Below the skeet tower right to left fairly slow quartering crosser, and a fast rising midi slightly crossing from right to left at about 35 yards, on report. This was a card killer for a lot of shooters this week. The right crosser was hit by most but a few did struggle because it was quite close so the shot pattern was tight. The left fast midi was quite difficult, I saw it as about 3 foot of lead and slightly below but saying that I struggled with this one. Some shooters seem to fall straight on it but the majority missed a few then worked it out for themselves.
Stand 4 Down the track, left to right curling looper, crossing and a slight right to left rising teal, on report. Darren had slightly moved both of these traps this week, everyone enjoyed this stand at the last shoot, and I think they did this week but it was slightly more difficult as I think most would agree. The crosser curled a bit more but it still had to be shot quick as the trees hid the clay until it passed between the bushes. Hold position was critical as, if ya gun wasn’t up you probably missed the opportunity to shoot the clay and then rush the shot and miss. The teal just needed to be shot slightly on the left as it peaked.
Stand 5 Left to right rabbit with a bail and a driven clay off the tower overhead slightly to the left of cage, on report. There was no excuses this week about seeing the rabbit . It ran really well despite the snow. Most shot this really well, the only decision was whether to take the rabbit before or after the bail. The tower was only half height this week so the clay was fairly close. See it shot it with a little lead, the sooner you shot it the easier.
Stand 6 Right to left quartering away crosser and a slow right to left crosser, on report. The slow crosser didn’t prove to difficult for most shooters but the going away crosser did cause a few upsets. I think a lot were shooting over the top as the lay of the land made the clay look like it was slightly rising but it actually was dropping.
Stand 7 Incoming suicidal rabbit and right to left looping clay coming out of the trees, on report The rabbit proved to be its usual funny clay, bouncing all over. As I said earlier there was a few problems with the clays being frozen so it was a pain but when it did work it was great fun. Not as easy as it looked as you all know. The looper was shot really well and I think most scored well on this stand.
Well that was it for this week. It was great to shoot in the snow and it actually wasn’t that cold. Top score I heard of on the day was 58 but that’s not to say that was top score, I was quite busy so did not get a chance to chat after the shoot. If you shot in the 50’s ya done really well and the average was high 40’s.
Pete’s usual moan I’m afraid, empty cartridges. Please if you shoot an auto pick up your empties but they are not the only culprits. It will take you seconds to pick them up after you have shot. It takes me a lot longer after the shoot to pick them all up especially in the snow and mud.
CAN I REMIND EVERY ONE IT IS A CLUB RULE TO PICK THEM UP.
THANK YOU.
(I know we have new member and their guest at the club so they might not know the rules about picking up empty cartridges. The Club Rules are in the Club House for all to see and READ you can also see the rules on this site under “Fixtures and Rules”, so there’s no excuse PICK EM UP! TC)
Moan over
Thanks to Darren & Natalie and also Tim & Helen And Tony for turning out in the snow and making today’s shoot possible.
